Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I set my location?
On first launch, Iqamah will ask for location permission to automatically detect your nearest city. If you prefer, you can skip this and select your city manually from the built-in list of 559 cities across 55 countries.
How do I change my city after setup?
Click the Iqamah icon in your menu bar → open the app window → go to Settings → Location. You can switch between GPS auto-detection and manual city selection at any time.
Does Iqamah require an internet connection?
No. All prayer times are calculated locally using astronomical algorithms. Iqamah makes zero network requests — it works fully offline, always.
Does Iqamah work on iPhone or iPad?
Not yet — Iqamah is currently macOS only. It lives in your menu bar and is designed specifically for the Mac desktop experience.
Prayer Times
Which calculation method should I use?
Iqamah supports six standard methods. Pick the one followed by your local mosque or region:
| Method | Commonly used in |
|---|---|
| MWL (Muslim World League) | Europe, Far East, Americas |
| ISNA | North America |
| Egyptian General Authority | Africa, Middle East |
| Umm Al-Qura | Saudi Arabia |
| Karachi (University of Islamic Sciences) | Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh |
| Tehran | Iran, some Shia communities |
Which Asr method should I use?
This depends on your madhab (school of jurisprudence). The Standard method (shadow length = object length) is followed by Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools. The Hanafi method (shadow length = twice the object length) gives a later Asr time. When in doubt, follow your local mosque.
My times don't match my local mosque — what do I do?
Use per-prayer minute adjustments. In Settings → Adjustments, you can add or subtract minutes for each prayer individually to match your mosque's timetable exactly.
Why is Fajr or Isha showing an unusual time?
At high latitudes (e.g. northern Canada, Scandinavia), the sun may not reach the angle used to calculate Fajr or Isha during summer months. Try switching calculation methods — some handle high-latitude edge cases better than others. The Umm Al-Qura and MWL methods are generally more stable at extreme latitudes.
The menu bar shows the wrong prayer. Why?
Iqamah shows the next upcoming prayer based on your Mac's system clock. Check that your Mac's date, time, and timezone are set correctly in System Settings → General → Date & Time.
Menu Bar
What does the red text in the menu bar mean?
When the next prayer is within 10 minutes, the menu bar text turns red as a gentle visual alert — a reminder to prepare without interrupting your work.
Can I hide Iqamah from the menu bar temporarily?
You can right-click the menu bar icon and choose Hide, or use macOS Stage Manager / menu bar management apps (e.g. Bartender) to show it only when needed.
Qiblah Compass
How accurate is the Qiblah direction?
The bearing is calculated from your selected city's coordinates to the Ka'bah in Makkah using the great-circle (shortest path) method. For most locations this is accurate to within a degree. Note that the compass shows a bearing, not a live magnetic compass — orient using a physical compass or your Mac's orientation.
Hijri Calendar
The Hijri date seems off by a day. Why?
Hijri months begin with the sighting of the new moon, which varies by region. Iqamah uses the calculated (astronomical) Hijri date, which may differ by ±1 day from locally observed dates. This is expected and normal.
Privacy & Data
Does Iqamah collect any data?
No. Iqamah collects nothing and makes no network connections. Your location is used on-device only to find the nearest city — it is never transmitted anywhere. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
How do I delete all my data?
Uninstall Iqamah from your Applications folder. All settings stored in
UserDefaults are removed automatically when the app is uninstalled.
